I may have spoken too soon. Turns out I’ve changed my mind about which cover of this one particular track to use. I’m torn between (among?) three (believe me, I have more, but I persevered and heroically managed to narrow it down) and I keep going back and forth on which one to include. Le sigh.
Okay, first up is the “cool” cover. It’s probably the closest to the original in terms of atmosphere. (Since the original is pretty great already, this is a compliment.) Pros: Biggest one is that I doubt anyone would hate it; it really just makes for pleasant listening. Cons: It’s not my personal favorite, honestly. I mean, it’s really good and sweet and all, but maybe rather too casual for this fanmix? And it fits a *little* too seamlessly with the rest of the songs—not a terrible thing, but it wouldn’t hurt for it to stand out a bit either.
Now, the second one takes the super earnest, heartfelt route—it has cellos/violins in it, for god’s sake. It’s slower and has a sort of ballad-y feel to it. Pros: If I wanted something a little more tear-jerking, this one’s it. Cons: The vocals may take some time to get used to. In fact, I thought the singer’s voice was kinda whiny and nasal in places at first. Actually, I still kinda do, despite now liking this cover a lot. Chances are someone might hate this and lump this as cheesy and horribly emo.
Speaking of vocals, if I were just choosing based on that, I’d pick the third version, easy. Actually, this cover is what made me want to make this fanmix in the first place. Pros: Like I said, the lovely vocals. It’s warm and strong and full of affection befitting the lyrics. Cons: A tad short. And maybe it’s a little too cheerful to sandwich between the other songs I’ve picked.
So yeah. I may be overthinking this a bit. After all, I’m just compiling this shit, you know? Well, whatever. I DO WHAT I WANT. [/wrong fandom]
P.S. Totally trashed the album cover and am redoing things from scratch.
Making a fanmix is supposed to be FUN dammit and the songs are all picked out and it’s fine and everything but OH MY GOD I have been tweaking this stupid album cover for the longest time and it sucks and I hate it and I suck so very much and AUGH I JUST WANT THIS DONE DAMMIT.
And if this was set in modern times, I can just imagine filthy rich society-girl-cum-Oxonian-about-town Charlotte F. Xavier hobnobbing at Chanel shindigs and exchanging air kisses with Karl Lagerfeld, while fashion bloggers furiously catalogue each and every single item of Charlotte’s clothing, accessories and handbags. And of course there’d be a fuckyeahcharlotte tumblr.
Obviously, most of it was down to the sheer beauty of Mr. McAvoy, but it’s nice to know I didn’t butcher the masterpiece that is his face with my redoubtable ~photoshop skillz~.
Speaking of: my god, making gifs is harder than I thought! I don’t know how some people can churn them out so quickly. Of course, a not inconsiderable number of my problems stems from the fact that my dear old laptop is not the most robust of machines so things tend to lag, etc. Photoshop froze up on me twice and before that, refused to import .avi’s. Turned out I lacked the appropriate codecs (whatever the fuck those are), and while I tried looking for them, I just ended up frustrated and resorted to converting the clips I needed to .mov’s with Oxelon Media Converter.
Anyway, I’m futzing around with a fairly simple graphic at the moment—I’d post it now but I’m not entirely sure if it’s displaying accurately. While the picture’s looking nice and pale on my laptop, it’s showing up with a yellow tinge on my iPad. I’d do a proper monitor calibration, but I’m in a hurry and more to the point, I have no funds and only have lint in my pockets.
Sooo could some kind soul please tell me how this graphic looks on their screen? I’ll send you a link to it via ask. Oh, and it’s of James’ lovely face, in case that’ll encourage you guys. Anyone?
(Also: Jeez, I’ve barely reblogged anything in two weeks? Crazy!)
“We were officially big in Japan (though thankfully no one in the band actually said that out loud) and we’d been booked for a headline tour. The first thing that happened when we landed was that a little dog came and set next to me. We’d all been drinking for the duration of the flight, and I thought it was the sweetest thing in the world - one of the special welcome dogs had taken a shine to me. Of course, it was the drugs dog, and they sit next to you to indicate they can smell something on you.”—Carl Barat, “Threepenny Memoir”
